Role
Communications Strategy, Conference Design, Creative Direction, & Experience Design
Overview
A Million Moments for Maternal Mortality Prevention was a statewide conference focused on addressing maternal mortality at the intersection of physical and mental health, substance use, and intimate partner violence. The event brought together healthcare professionals, behavioral health providers, community organizations, advocates, and lived experts to strengthen collaboration and improve maternal health outcomes across Kansas.
The Challenge
The conference addressed deeply emotional and complex subject matter connected to preventable maternal mortality and the systems influencing care and access. The challenge was not simply creating conference materials, but designing an experience that balanced urgency, empathy, collaboration, and hope while supporting meaningful engagement across multiple disciplines and perspectives.
Strategic Approach
The planning process intentionally focused on identifying the feeling and experience attendees should leave with after the conference. Rather than treating design and agenda development as separate processes, the work integrated communication strategy, session planning, visual identity, and attendee experience into a unified system.
Outcomes
The conference trained 239 professionals across healthcare, behavioral health, and community support systems through a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary event structure. Participants reported increased confidence, stronger interdisciplinary understanding, and plans to implement more trauma-informed, empathy-based, and collaborative approaches within their own work. The event received strong feedback for organization, speaker quality, and opportunities for cross-disciplinary engagement, with 94% of participants rating the conference as excellent.
